Welcome to English 12A

Upon entering English 12, an LCSD# 1 student has read and discussed literary texts across major genres and developed academic and literacy skills sufficient for success in secondary school. In preparation for post-secondary pursuits – college, career, and active citizenship – this course focuses on transitioning students into independent, literate lives. The first section of this course focuses on adult writing literacy – the essential skills and strategies for communication in a variety of essential contexts (including, but not limited to: digital communication, interview and employment artifacts, reports, articles, public discourse, and sustained, self-selected research ). Written assignments include essays, journals, and varied processes in research. The second section of this course focuses on adult reading literacy, with emphasis on literary theory for post-secondary and contemporary publishing contexts. Students may relate a work to historical circumstances, trace literary elements through a work or works, or consider moral or philosophical questions. By the end of English 12, students have become familiar with major trends and ideas of 21st Century literacies, honed skills of analysis and explanation, and demonstrated the essential ability to conduct and compose research.

Course Standards & GVC Curriculum

LCSD#1 has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which has been adopted by the state of Wyoming. The CCSS provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real work, reflecting the knowledge and skills that young people need for success in college and careers. English/Language Arts proficiency may be gained in this course, as well as the fulfillment of Hathaway credits.
