Copying Content from Another Course

It is possible to copy content, including assignments, modules, pages and discussions from one Canvas course to another. However, you only copy content from a course that you are listed as an instructor in. Also see What is the Course Import Tool?

This is an excellent option for teachers who want to develop a (shell) course prior to their actual course being released in the fall. It is also a great option for teachers who want to copy content from a previously taught course or from another current course. Also see Copy Content from a Shell.

If your colleague has a course that you want to copy, you will either need the colleague to add you as an instructor OR your colleague will need to (temporarily) add it to Commons so that you can download it. We will cover this process on the next page.

How to Copy Content

1. In Course Navigation, click the Settings link.

2. Select Import Course Content

3. In the Content Type drop-down menu, select the Copy a Canvas Course

4. In the Search for a course drop-down menu [1], select the course you would like to access. Courses are ordered alphabetically by most recent term. You can also choose to include completed courses by selecting the completed courses checkbox [2].

To search for a course by name, enter the name in the Course Name field [3]. Select the name of the course when it appears.

5. To import all content from the course, select the All Content radio button [1]. If you want to select specific content, click the Select specific content radio button [2].

Note: If you select the specific content option, you are required to select the content you want to import after you review the remaining page options. (See View Current Jobs) Once you start importing the content, the import selection cannot be canceled.

6. If you want to adjust the due dates associated with the course events and assignments, select the Adjust events and due dates checkbox.

7. Select the Import button.

View Current Jobs

The Current Jobs section displays the status of your import. Running reports display a menu bar with the time remaining to complete the import [1].

If you chose to select specific content in your course, the current job will show as Waiting for Select [2], which means you must select the content you want to import.

The import may also display other status indicators as part of the import process. Learn more about course import statuses.

View the content from any completed imports by accessing any link in Course Navigation.
